Georgi Rumenov was hired to join the men’s tennis coaching staff on July 2, 2019. He joins the Knights from the FIU women’s tennis team after helping guide the Panthers to a 49-13 record over his three seasons there with a 12-1 record in Conference-USA.
Rumenov's second campaign with the Knights was the most successful yet as the team posted a 22-4 record and saw UCF earn their first conference championship as part of The American as well as the team's first NCAA Tournament victory. The 22 victories is the highest win total achieved as a Division I program and is just one of three 22+ win seasons in team history. A dozen of UCF's 22 wins were over ranked opponents and 14 of their victories were consecutive, leading them into the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The team also achieved their highest ranking in program history, bursting into the top 10 as high as No. 9. Gabriel Decamps repeated as an All-American in singles, becoming the first Knight to be named an All-American more than once. Trey Hilderbrand and Bogdan Pavel were tabbed as All-Americans in doubles, becoming the sixth and seventh All-Americans in program history. All three were nationally seeded in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships. Decamps became the first member of the Black and Gold to go beyond the second round of the NCAA Singles Championships, reaching the quarterfinals where he fell to the top seed of the draw.
Rumenov’s first season with the Knights was a success, as the team went 10-3 and climbed to a record ranking of No. 22 in the Oracle/ITA team poll. The shortened 2020 dual match season saw one of the team’s best starts in program history before it came to a screeching halt due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The 10-3 mark was their best start through 13 matches since 2003. The team was the clear favorite to be the No. 1 seed in the American Athletic Conference tournament for the second consecutive season. The Black and Gold posted some incredible victories along the way, picking up ranked wins over No. 24 San Diego and No. 20 Texas Tech, both away from the USTA National Campus.
Rumenov got to coach the team’s final match of the shortened season solo as Director of Tennis John Roddick was out with an illness. The team picked up a solid 4-1 win in the season finale over South Alabama.
The first singles All-American in program history was produced through the 2019-20 campaign as Gabriel Decamps was named as one of 20 singles players to win the honor. He went 21-8 in singles in his junior year and was on pace to have one of the best seasons in program history. He climbed as high as No. 7 in the singles rankings, a new career best for Decamps. He and Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi went 17-5 overall in doubles, climbing as high as No. 6 in the doubles rankings and finishing the season at No. 7.
Rumenov played a big part during the tournament season as well. Decamps and Grassi Mazzuchi shone bright from the start, finishing as runners up at the ITA All-Americans and punching their ticket to Nationals, where Decamps wound up winning the singles consolation crown. Grassi Mazzuchi earned a runner-up finish in the ITA Southeast Regionals.
Rumenov had been at FIU for three seasons where he worked his way up the ladder. He was a graduate assistant under head coach Katarina Petrovic for the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons before being promoted to the team’s assistant coach in the fall of 2018. He helped lead the Panthers to their first Conference-USA title in the spring of 2018. They finished at No. 41 in the Oracle/ITA team rankings that season, their highest final ranking since the 2009 season. Off the court, he helped bring in a top-10 recruiting class in 2018. FIU finished with an 11-8 mark and a 4-1 record in Conference-USA during the spring of 2019.
Rumenov had a successful career as a player before turning to coaching. He played on the ATP Professional tennis tour and earned a career high ranking of 390 in singles and 374 in doubles. He played at the professional level for over 10 years. Rumenov claimed three championships and made it to two other finals in 2016 as he won the Portugal F5 singles and doubles title and the Portugal F6 and F9 singles crowns.
Rumenov was a four-year letter winner at Armstrong State University (Savannah, Georgia), where he helped ASU to back-to-back NCAA Division II National Championship appearances (2012, 2013), winning the 2012 crown. A two-time First-Team All-American (2012, 2013), Rumenov was named the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year in both 2012 and 2013, while garnering PBC First-Team All-Conference accolades (singles and doubles), PBC MVP honors (singles and doubles) and ASU MVP recognition (singles and doubles) as the Pirates won back-to-back PBC regular season and tournament titles. Named team captain in 2013, Rumenov was awarded the ITA Senior Player of the Year award.
Prior to his time at ASU, Rumenov claimed six doubles titles on the ATP Tour (2009, 2010), while winning the 2005 Orange Bowl Championship.
A member of the Dean’s List, he graduated from ASU with a degree in general economics in 2014.
