Men’s Hoops Powers Past FGCU, 102-80

by Aiden Kocol

ORLANDO – Behind a program-record night from three-point range and a balanced scoring effort that saw five Knights reach double figures, Men’s Hoops rolled past FGCU, 102-80, on Saturday night at Addition Financial Arena.

The victory improved the Knights to 11-1 on the season and extended their winning streak to nine games, continuing both the best start and longest win streak under head coach Johnny Dawkins.

"You have to keep believing in each other and keep fighting for each other. A game isn’t usually won or lost in one half. You have to stay committed to what you’re trying to do within your system."

Head Coach Johnny Dawkins

The opening half was a back-and-forth affair, featuring six ties and seven lead changes. After a scoreless first two minutes, Themus Fulks broke the deadlock by taking his own steal coast-to-coast for a layup at the 18:31 mark, giving the Knights the first points of the night and sending them up 2-0. FGCU quickly found its offensive rhythm from long range, draining 9-of-11 three-point attempts in the first half to shoot an impressive 82 percent from deep—well above its season average of 8.5 made threes per game.

Despite FGCU’s efficiency, the Knights stayed level from behind the arch, connecting on 19-of-35 throughout the evening, setting a new program benchmark for three-pointers made in a single game, breaking the previous record of 17 set in 2023 vs. Tulsa on Feb. 11.

The three-point barrage was led by Jordan Burks, who drilled a career-high six triples on his way to a game-high 23 points, also a personal best for the Alabama native.

By the midway point of the half, an 11-6 run fueled by eight points from Fulks gave the Black and Gold a slim 32-31 advantage. FGCU responded with a 13-5 surge to build its largest lead of the game at 49-41 with just under two minutes remaining before halftime. But the lead was short-lived, as the Knights closed the half on an 8-0 run, capped by a last-second layup from Fulks, sending the teams into the locker room tied at 49.

Carrying that momentum into the second half, Jamichael Stillwell opened the scoring with a second-chance layup followed by a subsequent free throw, giving the Knights a 52-49 lead on the opening possession.

Stillwell finished the night with 14 points and 13 rebounds to earn his second consecutive double-double and fifth of the season. His 13 rebounds included eight on the offensive glass, pushing his season total to 46 offensive boards, the second most in the Big 12.

While the Eagles kept the deficit within four early in the second half, the Knights seized control with a decisive 15-5 run to extend the lead to 78-64 with 9:33 remaining. The surge was highlighted by a pair of three-pointers from Devan Cambridge, who finished with 16 points.

The outing marked Cambridge’s first double-digit scoring performance of the season and his highest point total as a Knight. Cambridge was also nearly perfect from the field, knocking down 6-of-7 attempts, including a perfect 4-of-4 from the three-point line.

Cambridge was one of five Knights to score in double figures, joined by Chris Johnson (12) and Fulks (21). Fulks and Johnson also directed the offense throughout the night, each handing out five assists.

Fulks now ranks third in the Big 12 in total assists with 74 on the season, while continuing to take excellent care of the basketball, recording just one game with more turnovers than assists.

John Bol also made an impact on the glass, pulling down a career-high nine rebounds for the sophomore.

The Knights never relinquished their second-half lead after the opening play, outscoring the Eagles 53-31 after the break to secure a decisive 102-80 victory.
