JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The UCF women’s soccer team scored a pair of second-half goals on its way to recording a 2-0 shutout victory over North Florida in its final non-conference match of the season on Thursday evening at Hodges Stadium.
Honoka Hamano found the back of the net in the 55th minute and Ainsley Moy followed by converting on a penalty kick in the 73rd minute to help the Knights move to 6-1-0. The 6-1-0 start marks the Black and Gold’s best start through seven games since 2002.
“UNF played well defensively, and its goalkeeper was great tonight,” head UCF coach Tiffany Roberts Sahaydak said. “After not scoring in the opening half, we knew we had to come out and continue to be persistent and stay positive in the second half. It was great to see the team do just that and relieve the pressure by finding the back of the net twice to help us get the result that we were looking for.”
UCF was the aggressor in the opening half, as it got off a number of shots in the opening stages, which included a trio of shots on goal in the first 15 minutes from Rajanah Reed. But UNF’s Chrissa Avery was able to make the saves to keep the match scoreless.
The Knights took a total of 10 shots in the opening half with four of them coming on frame but couldn’t find the back of the net, as the game remained scoreless at the break.
With the Black and Gold still on the attack in the second half, Kalena Bellini fed a pass to Hamano outside of the box. The midfielder fired a deep strike and drilled it into the back of the net with her right foot to give the Knights a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute. The goal marked Hamano’s second of the season as well as the freshman Bellini’s second collegiate assist.

UCF followed with shots on frame from Reed and Liz Worden over the next couple of minutes, but North Florida’s keeper was there to keep it a 1-0 score.
In the 73rd minute, the sophomore Moy drove into the box and was fouled. After a yellow card was called on UNF’s Sarah Frazer, the Black and Gold were awarded a penalty kick in the center of the box. Moy managed to slot a shot past a diving attempt from the keeper on the left side of the goal to extend UCF’s lead. The goal marked Moy’s second of the season and the third of her career.

The Knights didn’t let up on the attack from there, as they got off another shot on goal from Moy and a shot that sailed just high from Katsi Bengoa down the stretch and went on to pull out the 2-nil victory.
Genesis Perez Watson recorded her second shutout of the season in goal for the Knights to move to 6-1-0 on the year. She finished with a pair of saves on the night.
In all, the Black and Gold outshot the Ospreys 17-4 as well as 10-2 in shots on goal. UNF dropped to 2-5-2 with the result. Reed led the way with career highs of six shots and four shots on frame, while Moy and Worden followed with three shots apiece.
The contest not only marked UCF’s final non-conference match of the year but also its final game against an in-state opponent. With the victory, the Black and Gold posted a 4-1-0 record against Sunshine State opponents on the season. UCF also defeated Florida on the road, as well as Florida Atlantic and South Florida at home.
The Knights will now return home to open Big 12 Conference play on Thursday, Sept. 18 against West Virginia at the UCF Soccer Complex. The match will begin at 7 p.m. and will mark the Black and Gold’s first of 11 league games on the season.
