Sophomore right-hander Matt Sauser was tabbed the Big 12 Co-Pitcher of the Week on April 21 after going a career-long 8.0 innings while striking out a career-best eight batters en route to leading UCF to a 4-2 Saturday victory to earn the series win over the Horned Frogs. In his first weekend start as a Knight, Sauser allowed just two runs on five hits while striking out the eight batters and not issuing a walk. He faced the minimum in six of his eight innings of work, which included a stretch in which he retired 14 straight batters. Over 104 total pitches on the afternoon, Sauser threw 77 for strikes.

WILLIAMSON HITS FOR THE CYCLE

For the first time since 2015, a UCF Knight hit for the cycle. Andrew Williamson achieved the rare feat in his first four at-bats on May 11 at Texas Tech with a double in the first, home run in the second, triple in the fifth and single in the seventh. He finished the game going 4-for-5 with four runs scored and two runs batted in. The homer marked his third of the weekend as he homered in all three games against the Red Raiders. The cycle marked UCF’s first since Tommy Williams hit for the cycle on March 13, 2015, against Fairfield.

SECOND LARGEST HOME CROWD IN PROGRAM HISTORY

UCF’s March 4 game against Florida had a lot of highlights. But one of the biggest was the size of the crowd. Knight Nation packed John Euliano Park that evening to see the Knights defeat the sixth-ranked Gators by the score of 13-3. The final attendance was totaled at 4,204 to mark the second-largest home crowd in program history. This attendance figure was only 115 fans behind the Knights’ all-time record of 4,319 on March 3, 2015, against Florida. The Black and Gold defeated the then-No. 2 ranked Gators 4-3 that night as well.

The Knights also had a stretch in which they scored 10 runs or more in five straight games and six of seven. During that stretch, which went on to include an eight-game winning streak, UCF outscored the opposition by an impressive tally of 103-22.

ESPINAL’S WALK-OFF HEROICS

UCF’s Feb. 21 game against Bryant resulted in a 7-6 win for the Knights thanks to the heroics of Edian Espinal. After being brought into the game in the bottom of the ninth as a pinch hitter and with his team down a run, Espinal made the most of his lone at-bat by driving the ball into left field for a two-run walk-off single to give the Black and Gold the win. This hit gave Espinal, who transferred to UCF from the junior college Chipola before the season, his first RBIs as a Knight as well as at the NCAA Division I level.
