Men’s Golf Finishes Third at Daytona Beach Intercollegiate

by Justin Wilson

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Despite tough conditions on the course throughout the week with wind gusts reaching nearly 20 miles per hour, the UCF men’s golf team overcame the elements to claim a third-place finish at the Daytona Beach Intercollegiate Tuesday afternoon at LPGA International.

The Knights tallied a team score of 900 (+36) to tie for third along with Florida Atlantic. Troy won the event with a 14-over-par 878 and host Stetson was second with an 896 (+32).

UCF finished ahead of six teams that entered the tournament ranked ahead of the Black and Gold in the latest Scoreboard by Clippd rankings, headlined by defeating North Alabama (No. 89), which began the intercollegiate with a 43-8-1 record.

Clemente Silva put together one of his best performances in his UCF tenure with a three-round score of 218 (+2) to finish third on the player leaderboard. He shot an even par 72 in Tuesday’s final round and ended just three strokes shy of the individual champion, Troy’s Brantley Scott with a 215 (-1).

The Santiago, Chile, native had five birdies in the third round, including three on the front nine. Silva had 11 birdies over three rounds in the tournament.

Chase Haygood tallied a top 20 finish in his hometown on a course that he’s played numerous times. He closed out the week with a 77 (+5) Tuesday and a 226 (+10) for the tournament to tie for 17th. Haygood was one over through the front nine, but a tough back nine inflated his score to five over.

Jakob Stavang Stubhaug carded a score of 230 (+14) over the three-round intercollegiate to finish among the top 40 at 38th. He shot a 78 in Tuesday’s blistering winds.

Checking in one stroke behind him was Lucas Dutartre with a 15-over-par 231. Dutartre had a 79 in the final round, dropping in birdie putts on No. 2 and No. 8.

Palmer Haynes rounded out the scoring for the Knights with the same score as Dutartre. Tuesday’s final round saw the freshman shoot a 76 (+4), equaling his tally from the opening round. He recorded a birdie on No. 16.

Gustav Andersson had a great showing in the tournament competing as an individual, as he tied for 13th with a 224 (+8). He had an awesome front nine Tuesday at -2 with birdies on No. 7, 8 and 9. Andersson also birdied two holes on the back nine, but a few bogeys forced him to settle for one over on the day.

UCF will return to action March 17-18 at the ECU Intercollegiate held in Greenville, North Carolina, at the Brook Valley Country Club.
