MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The UCF volleyball team fell 3-1 in a hard-fought match Wednesday night at the WVU Coliseum.
UCF (8-7, 1-5 Big 12) and West Virginia (7-11, 1-5) each tallied 55 kills but the Mountaineers recorded eight digs and 10 aces. Three Knights notched double digits in kills with Alexia Kuehl leading the pack with 15 kills, Emily Wilson added in 13 while Britt Carlson recorded 10. On the defensive side, Chloe Scheer finished the night with 14 digs. Abby Schomers and Mya Ball split time in the setter position as each dished out 22 assists.
West Virginia got out to a quick 2-0 start but a solo block from Megan Holland helped get the Knights on board. A 4-0 UCF rally tied the set up at 15 with a kill from Sasha Cohen. The Knights continued to rally and took the set 25-20.
The second set started with both teams trading points but following a 6-6 tie from a Heidi Bonde kill, West Virginia went on a 4-1 run to take the lead, 10-7. The Black and Gold chipped away at the Mountaineers’ lead with a 3-0 run ignited by an ace from Scheer, 21-13. Although, West Virginia never relinquished its lead and took the set 25-20.
West Virginia dominated the third set with a 6-0 run, establishing a 13-6 lead. The Mountaineers continued their momentum with a 25-15 set win.
In the fourth set, the Knights jumped to an early 7-1 lead. UCF continued to hold the lead until West Virginia leveled the score at 22-22. Both teams continued to rally but the Mountaineers secured the set, 29-27.
