ORLANDO - The UCF volleyball team hosts West Virginia on Wednesday for its Big 12 home opener then the team heads to Ohio for a matchup against Cincinnati on Saturday.
The Matchup
- UCF came away with wins last year against the Mountaineers and the Bearcats.
- West Virginia has tallied 93 service aces which marks it fifth in the Big 12.
- Cincinnati boasts a .267 hitting percentage and is ranked sixth in the conference.
- Wednesday’s matchup features the Mountaineers and Knights battling for their first win in Big 12 conference play this season.
Scouting West Virginia
- The Mountaineers enter the matchup 6-7 on the season, as they started out Big 12 conference play with two losses against Cincinnati and Iowa State.
- Head coach Jen Greeny is in her first season with WVU as she spent the last 13 years at the helm for Washington State.
- West Virginia and UCF are tied 1-1 in the series, as the Knights came out on top last season, 3-0.
- Cassidy Tanton leads the Mountaineers in kills with 187 and is ranked ninth in the Big 12 with 3.46 kills per set.
- Sydney Reed has recorded 190 digs this season which ranks 10th in the Big 12.
Scouting Cincinnati
- The Bearcats head into the match with a 10-2 record and 1-0 in Big 12 play.
- Head coach Molly Alvey is in her 13th season with Cincinnati with a 197-173 record.
- The Knights boast an 18-8 record over the Bearcats, earning two wins last season at Cincinnati.
- Carly Glendinning leads the Bearcats with 161 kills and 12 aces.
- Katelyn Lefler is ranked fourth in the Big 12 with 10.62 assists per set.
100 Wins
- Head coach Jenny Maurer eclipsed her 100th career win as a head coach on August 31 against Virginia Tech.
- Maurer is in her second season as head coach at UCF and had previous stops at Lehigh (2007-2010) and Bradley (2011-2015),
Road Warriors
- The Knights started their season out with three weekends on the road.
- UCF traveled to Virginia and North Carolina, along with two weekends on the road in Florida.
- It marked the first time since the 2017 season that the Knights played their first three weekends away from The Venue.
Double-Trouble Trio
- Three Knights have recorded double-doubles this season led by Avah Armour with three followed by Abby Schomers and Emily Wilson with two.
- Schomers and Armour each produced a double-double in the first match of the season against Virginia Tech.
- Schomers dished out 40 assists and 10 digs while Armour recorded 16 kills and 10 digs.
- Wilson earned her first double-double of the season in the first matchup against Nevada (9/19) tallying 21 kills and 10 digs.
Year Two in the Big 12
- The Knights ended their inaugural season in the Big 12 Conference with a 17-12 overall record and 8-10 in conference play.
- This season the Knights will open league play on ESPNU at Kansas on Sept. 25.
- With the addition of four new members into the Big 12, the Knights will host Colorado for the first time since 2003, Utah (1996) and travel to Arizona and Arizona State for the first time in program history.
Milestone Watch
- Chloe Scheer has recorded 1,319 digs in her career at UCF, which ranks her fifth in the individual career records for career digs.
- The Murrieta, California, native currently has 126 aces, where she sits at No. 9 on the individual career list.
Knight in Shining Armour
- Headlined by eight matches with double digits in kills along with a career-high 18 kills at Stetson (9/5).
- Armour recorded her first double-double this season in the season opener against Virginia Tech (8/31).
- The Colorado native’s 18 kills at Stetson rank in the top five in the Big 12 for kills in a three-set match.
Knights In The Rankings
- Four players are currently ranked in the top 10 of the Big 12 rankings.
- Chloe Scheer is third in the conference, averaging 4.38 digs per set.
- Scheer is sixth with 184 total digs.
- Abby Schomers slides in at No. 5 with 10.24 assists per set.
- Avah Armour has tallied 9.67 attacks per set which ranks fifth in the Big 12.
- Alexia Kuehl ranks sixth in the Big 12, hitting a .405 clip.
Officials Appreciation Week
- This is the 4th annual American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Officials Appreciation Week (Sept. 27- Oct. 5).
- The nine-day period is set aside to make sure our officials know they are part of the sport.
- Prior to the match, both teams will recognize the officials to show their support.
