Boxrucker Twirls Gem, UCF Shuts Out Jacksonville 6-0

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Cade Boxrucker finished just one out shy of a no-hitter, as UCF recorded its second shutout on the year over an in-state foe by blanking Jacksonville 6-0 in midweek action on Tuesday night at John Sessions Stadium.

Boxrucker shined on the mound for the Black and Gold all night long, as he allowed just four baserunners over 8.2 innings of impressive action. Looking for UCF’s (16-6) first solo no-hitter since 1973, Boxrucker retired the first two men he faced in the last of the ninth via a flyout and a strikeout. Just one out away, JU’s (11-13) Abdriel Delgado managed to drop in a double to left center that landed just out of the reach of centerfielder Andrew Williamson to break up the no-no. Spencer Bauer then came on and promptly retired the first man he faced to end the ballgame and preserve the one-hit shutout.

Over his outstanding outing, the senior right-hander Boxrucker went a career-long 8.2 innings and surrendered just one hit and no runs while striking out four. Boxrucker threw 112 pitches on the night and retired 12 batters via groundout and 10 via flyout.

“From pitch number one Cade was on his game. He showed great fastball command, the use of his slider, and his change up was in play. He attacked and attacked, and you could tell from pitch one that he had something special going,” head UCF coach Rich Wallace said. “I kept asking him in the late innings where he was at, and he asked me to give him a shot, so we rode it out there and I can’t believe he did what he did. It was just an unbelievable performance.”

The Knights took advantage of a couple of Jacksonville errors in the top of the second inning to jump out to an early 2-0 lead. Danny Neri started the frame with a one-out double and later moved to third on a groundout. He came in to score as Andrew Williamson reached on an error by the first baseman to make it 1-0. The Black and Gold then added another after Williamson stole second and then came in to score on another defensive miscue by the Dolphins’ first baseman.

Prevesk started off the third inning with a leadoff double and later scored from second on a pair of JU throwing errors on a failed pickoff attempt to extend UCF’s lead to 3-0.

With Boxrucker looking strong on the mound, the Knights then loaded the bases in the sixth with two away. Mikey Kluska drove them all in with a bases-clearing triple down the rightfield line to extend UCF’s advantage to 6-0. Andrew Brait, Williamson, and Braden Calise all scored on Kluska’s team-leading third triple of the year.

The Dolphins got a runner aboard in the bottom of the seventh via a walk, but Kluska and Calise were able to make back-to-back nice defensive plays to send it to the eighth. Boxrucker continued to pitch well in the late innings, as he retired the side in order in the eighth to send it to the ninth.

In the last of the ninth, Anthony Calabro made a nice catch on a ball hit deep to right for the first out of the frame. Boxrucker then responded to strike out JU’s Justin Nadeau for the second out before Delgado managed to drop in a well-placed hit to left centerfield to break out the no-hit bid.

Boxrucker earned his second win of the season to improve to 2-1. Jacksonville’s Blake Barquin was tagged with the loss to drop to 0-2.

Offensively, Prevesk led the Knights by finishing a homer shy of the cycle by going 3-for-4 with a single, double, triple and a run scored. Kluska was next by going 1-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs.

With the win, UCF improved to a perfect 6-0 in midweek competition and 8-1 against Sunshine State foes.

Tuesday’s ballgame marked the lone meeting on the year between UCF and JU.

The Knights will now return home to host Texas Tech for a Big 12 series this weekend at John Euliano Park. Due to the Easter holiday, the series will run Thursday to Saturday, March 28-30.
