Men's Hoops Signs Marchelus Avery

by Ken Landis

ORLANDO – The UCF men’s basketball team has added transfer Marchelus Avery to the 2023-24 roster, head coach Johnny Dawkins announced Monday.

"Marchelus brings in the ability to knockdown shots from the three-point line and can score the basketball from anywhere on the court,” said Coach Dawkins. “We’re happy to have him join our UCF family."

Avery comes to Orlando from New Mexico State where he sunk 41.8% of his three-pointers. The rising junior shot 47.4% from the floor last year, bumping his career mark from the field to 46.4%. He scored a career-high 26 points against Northern New Mexico this past December, going 11-of-14 from the floor. Avery recorded two double-doubles last season, recording his first with 20 points and 10 rebounds against North Carolina A&T and then again three games later against Stephen F. Austin, scoring 16 points while grabbing another 10 rebounds. His pair of double-doubles came in a run of seven games where he scored double digit points five times.

Avery is the fifth Knight to transfer in for UCF’s inaugural season in the Big 12 Conference. He is joined by forward Omar Payne from Jacksonville, guard Shemarri Allen from UMKC, guard Jaylin Sellers from Ball State and forward Ibrahima Diallo from San Jose State. Two freshmen make up the rest of the seven newcomers for 2023-24, as guards Nils Machowski and Comeh Emuobor are set for their first year of collegiate basketball.

Avery will wear No. 13 for the Knights this season.
