UCF Set for AAC Indoor Track and Field Championship

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UCF track and field team opens the 2022 American Athletic Conference Indoor Championship on Friday in Birmingham, Alabama.
 
Following a one-year hiatus, the American Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships return to the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama. The 2022 American championships are scheduled for Feb. 25-26 on ESPN+, with Lincoln Rose and Kit McConnico on the call during both days of the meet.
 
Friday action begins with the pentathlon at 10 am. ET. Four Knights are slated to compete in the long jump at 3 p.m. ET and a trio of Knights are in the weight throw field at 5:15 p.m. ET.
 
Track events begin at 1:25 p.m. ET with the mile. UCF will have competitors in the prelims of the mile, 400-meter dash, 60-meter hurdles, 60-meter dash, 800-meter run and 200-meter dash. Friday's trials determine the eight-person field for Saturday's finals. UCF will also compete in the distance medley relay on Friday.
 
On Saturday, the Black and Gold open the day at 10:45 a.m. ET with four competitors in the high jump. UCF's field events conclude with four Knights in the triple jump at noon ET. In addition to the finals for Friday's events, Saturday features the 3000-meter run at 2:40 p.m. ET. The 4x400 relay rounds out the weekend at 3:40 p.m. ET and the awards ceremony will be held at 4:20 p.m. ET.
 
UCF's last indoor conference championship performance came in 2020 when the Knights finished eighth. The Black and Gold send 12 members back to Birmingham who have indoor championship experience, including all-conference performers Samieryah Bradwell and Latasha Smith.
 
UCF holds 26 top eight marks in 12 events entering the championship, and the Knights have the top performance in five events this season.
 
Rayniah Jones has turned in the top mark in both the 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles. In her last outing, Jones broke the UCF 60-meter hurdles record and tied the American Athletic Conference record in the event.
 
Latasha Smith sits at the top of the 400-meter dash performance list with a school record 52.88. Asherah Collins broke the UCF freshman record for the top mark in The American at 42-6.25/12.97m. The 4x4 relay squad of Smith, Danielle Bess, Kiah Williams and Samieryah Bradwell lead the conference with a season-best 3:36.61.
 
Three War on I-4 points will also be on the line. The Knights enter the championship with a 30-12 lead in the overall rivalry series this year.
