ORLANDO, Fla. – The UCF softball team is set for another midweek contest, this time matching up with in-state foe FIU on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Miami.
The Knights return to action after facing some top tier competition at the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational. UCF came away from their six-game trip with a pair of wins, both over Big 12 opponents. The Black and Gold beat Texas Tech 7-3 in eight innings before triumphing over No. 11 Texas 15-10 for the Knights' second win over a top 25 opponent this season.
Savannah Adams had a great performance last week and was named to the American Athletic Conference's Honor Roll. She played in four games, starting in three, earning a .444 batting average and 1.011 OPS. She tallied a double, a walk and five RBI over that time.
Jada Cody will enter the contests with 13 hits and 13 RBI in 2022, ranking 78th and 22nd in the country respectively. She averages 1.18 hits per game, good enough for 88th in the nation.
Micaela Macario stole five bases this past week, giving her a total of seven for the year. The rookie now sits at No. 18 in the NCAA's stolen base rankings and is 36th in steals per game, averaging 0.7.
Gianna Mancha checks in at No. 85 in strikeouts per seven innings pitched, sitting with a 9.1 clip. She has totaled 23 punchouts so far on the campaign, which is the 126th most in college softball.
Shannon Doherty is known for her power as she leads the team with a pair of homers this season, but she is also among the nation's leaders in hit by pitches. Doherty ranks 97th in the country hit by pitches per game, getting plunked about one in every four games, a 0.27 mark.
Doherty has drawn seven walks this season, tied for the team lead with Kennedy Searcy. Those two aren't the only ones drawing free passes, as the Knights are ranked 11th in the country walks, working 46 through 11 games.
FIU enters Wednesday with a record of 4-6 in 2022 after going 14-26 last season. The Panthers have a pair of wins against Buffalo as well as defeats of Cleveland State and UNC Greensboro. FIU matched up with Tennessee twice on the opening weekend of the season, falling in a tight 4-3 meeting in their first contest before getting beat 7-1 in game two of the double header.
Kayla Whitehead leads the Panthers in batting average, posting 10 hits and a .385 mark through 10 games played. She's only struck out three times and has three RBI to this point in the campaign. In the circle, Alexys Lawson has appeared in seven of FIU's 10 games, tossing 25 innings pitched. She owns a team best 3.08 ERA along with a 3-3 record, striking out 18 batters and walking 13. Kendahl Dunford leads the Panthers in innings pitched and punchouts with 30 and 26 respectively.
UCF leads the all-time series against FIU by a count of 8-5. The Black and Gold have outscored FIU 19-8 in the last four meetings and 63-45 since the series began back in 2005.
