Two Knights Advance to Elite Eight at ITA Regionals

ORLANDO, Fla. – Evgeniya Levashova and Marie Mattel of the UCF women's tennis team both advanced to the singles elite eight at the ITA Southeast Regional tournament at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
 
No. 80 Evgeniya Levashova cruised to a win over No. 41 Carly Briggs from Florida, who played as the No. 5 seed in the tournament, with a score of 6-2 6-1 to advance to the elite eight tomorrow.
 
In her third match on a hot and sunny day, Mattel battled hard with Alicia Dudeney from Florida for the first set. Mattel was able to come out on top winning the first in 7-6(5) before taking control of the second, 6-1, to win the match and join Levashova in the elite eight.
 
In doubles action, Mattel and Nandini Sharma opened the day with a big upset over No. 50 Ania Hertel and Guillermina Grant from Georgia in a comeback win with a score of 8-7(5) in the sweet sixteen. The pair moved on to the elite eight were they saw the likes of Alicia Dudeney and Sydney Berlin of Florida. Mattel and Sharma put up a great fight but were unable to hold on as they fell 8-5.
 
Anique Kattenberg and Jaleesa Leslie faced Kamila Umarova and Yasmine Kabbaj from FIU in the sweet sixteen. The duo had good looks but ultimately fell 8-3.
