TAMPA, Fla. – The UCF women's tennis notched nine victories on day one of the Bedford Cup in Tampa, Fla. on Friday, October 1, competing in both doubles and singles.
In doubles action, Nandini Sharma and Marie Mattel, playing as the No. 3 seed in the tournament, started things off right with a dominating win over Aylen Hubeaut and Sierra Sandy in a quick 6-0 decision. The pair moved on to the second round where they defeated the duo of Emma Bardet and Ida Ferding in 6-2 to advance to the semifinals, which will be played tomorrow.
Jaleesa Leslie and Nadja Bay Christians, playing the No. 2 seed in the tournament, had a bye in the first round before taking on Sierra Berry and Amelia Boy. The duo was unable to hold on as they fell by a score of 6-4.
In singles play, the Knights picked up seven wins.
Jaleesa Leslie grabbed a win over Fanny Norin, after winning the battle in the first set, 7-6(2), and coming back even stronger to take the second in 6-3. In the second round, Leslie defeated Greta Schieroni in easier fashion with a 6-4, 6-2 decision to advance to the quarterfinals tomorrow.
As the No. 4 seed, Sharma had a bye in the first round before defeating Amelie Boy in 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals tomorrow.
Mattel also earned a pair of wins after first defeating Andjela Skrobonja in a quick 6-0, 6-3, and she then defeated Annabelle Davis in another quick match with a score of 6-2, 6-1. Mattel will join Leslie and Sharma in the quarterfinals tomorrow.
Nadja Bay Christians kicked off with a win over Summer Yardley in two sets, 6-2, 6-2, but would later fall to Kamila Umarova by a score of 6-0, 6-3.
Playing in the B Draw, Anique Kattenberg fell to Isabella Colmenares in 6-2, 6-4. In her second match of the day, Kattenberg found her rhythm as she defeated Anna Dovgopolyi by a score of 6-4, 6-1.
