CARY, N.C. – The UCF women's tennis competed in singles at the Wolfpack Invitational/Ranked Spotlight on Saturday, September 25, at the Cary Tennis Park.
No. 20 Valeriya Zeleva, No. 80 Evgeniya Levashova, Marie Mattel, Nandini Sharma, and Jaleesa Leslie all saw action on the second day of singles action.
In quarterfinals, No. 20 Zeleva, playing the tournament as #5-8, pushed the match to three sets, but fell to No. 95 Layne Sleeth from Oklahoma by a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 decision. She would later take on No. 18 Salma Ewing of USC in a tight match, but also fell 3-6, 7-5, (10-7).
No. 80 Levashova, playing as the #9-16 seed, made things interesting in the second set, but was unable to overcome Sarah Hamner of South Carolina, 6-3, 7-6(4). In her second match of the day, Levashova faced Lucia Marzal Martinez from Ohio State and nearly took the first set, but fell 7-6(3), 6-1.
Nandini Sharma tried to fight back but dropped her first match to Neha Velaga from Princeton in 6-4, 7-5. Later she would also fall to Emma Stake of Oklahoma by a 6-1, 6-3 decision. Jaleesa Leslie also fell in her match to Andrea Cerdan of Michigan, 6-2, 6-2 and to Amelia Rajecki of NC State in 6-2, 6-0. Marie Mattel tied it up 1-1 but was unable to hold on as she fell to Eleonara Molinaro from Tennessee by a score of 6-3, 3-6, (10-7).
The Knights will close out both singles and doubles play tomorrow.
