ORLANDO, Fla. – The No. 18 UCF women's tennis team cruised to its second win in 24 hours as they defeated FAU by a count of 7-0 on Sunday afternoon.
"I thought today went alright," said head coach Bryan Koneicko. "We played a solid doubles point, FAU pushed us, they did well in singles. We didn't lose a set in singles but I still think we need to do a little better job of closing some games out. You can never complain with two wins on the weekend but we also need to understand that we need to keep finishing the way we want and need to."
Doubles play was tight throughout. The Knights earned the early edge in the segment with a 6-4 win on court three as Rebeka Stolmar and Nandini Sharma edged May Kimhi and Martina Kudelova. FAU answered by taking court two where Radka Buzkova and Katerina Filip topped Evgeniya Levashova and Nadja Bay Christians 6-1. UCF's dynamic duo of No. 60 Kuznetsova and Zeleva got back to their winning ways as they edged Natalia Boltinskaya and Louie McLelland 6-4 at the top singles spot. Kuznetsova and Zeleva advance to 7-1 this season with the victory.
The Knights took control of the match in singles, winning all six first frames. Some were tight while others were wide open. Kuznetsova earned the first singles victory of the match as she cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 decision on court four over Na Kallmunzerova. Sunday's win gives Kuznetsova seven straight victories in singles.
Another Knight with pushed her winning streak to seven as No. 67 Zeleva picked up a 6-1, 7-5 victory at the top singles spot over Boltinskaya.
No. 42 Stolmar secured the match for the Knights as she triumphed over Kudelova at the second singles spot in the lineup. Play continued following the match reaching a decision.
Sharma was next to finish for UCF as she tallied a 7-6 (7-2), 6-0 win on court six over Kimhi. Following soon after was No. 95 Levashova who earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Filip at number three singles. Capping off the clean sweep was Jaleesa Leslie on court five with a 6-0, 7-6 (8-6) win against McLelland.
Five of UCF's nine wins so far this season have been sweeps. The Knights were riding a record-breaking point streak earlier in the season after blanking three straight opponents.
The Black and Gold have won their last ten matches against the Owls and boast a 28-11 advantage in the all-time series. UCF has been victorious in 23 of the last 26 meetings against FAU.
