Season Preview: Freshmen

ORLANDO (UCFKnights.com) – The 2020 softball season is right around the corner and after saying goodbye to nine student-athletes from the 2019 squad, the Knights have welcomed 12 newcomers, including seven freshmen, to help them compete in 2020 and beyond.

The young core will battle to make their presence known early for UCF as a pair of pitchers, a catcher, two outfielders and two infielders will fill the gaps in the Knights lineup.

Let's meet the incoming class:

#1 // Madelyn Bejarano // OF
Bejarano comes to the Knights with a familiar face already on the team in her cousin Haley Bejarano, who is in her third year with UCF. Madelyn, an outfielder by trade, was named a first team selection and first team all-division as a freshman at Mingus Union High School in Cottonwood, Arizona. During her time with the Marauders, she set school records in batting average, hits, extra base hits, doubles, triples and stolen bases. Expect Bejarano to bring a mix of speed and defense, among other tools, to the Knights in 2020 and beyond.

#3 // Molly Rainey // OF/P
Rainey brings a versatile set of tools to the Knights. The Ada, Oklahoma native dominated the competition as a member of her Byng high school squad, hitting over .540 in every season that she played and tallying 18 combined home runs. To go along with the offensive production, Rainey registered 813 strikeouts in four seasons in the circle and posted a career-low 0.80 ERA her junior year. She was a two-time first team All-Conference and All-District player and intends to major in Pre-Physical Therapy as a student at UCF.

#10 // Juliana Wilson // C
The lone new backstop to the Knights in 2020, Wilson has hit over .600 with at least a 1.000 slugging percentage in three years of varsity softball at Watsonville high school in Watsonville, California, hitting a combined 23 home runs with 111 RBI. She was named All-League for four consecutive seasons and led her team to the 2017 CCS Division I Championship. Wilson will bring a mix of solid defense behind the plate with plus hitting tool for a backstop. She intends to major in Bioengineering, Prosthetic's Technology at UCF.

#11 // Madisyn Davis // P
One of the two new hurlers to the Knights' staff in 2020, Madisyn Davis boasted quite the career at Oakleaf High School in Orange Park, Florida. The transition to the collegiate level should prove to be smooth for Davis as the right-hander went undefeated in her freshman and sophomore seasons, was named the 8A pitcher of the year in her 2018 season, was voted Clay County Player of the Year in 2018, and led the Oakleaf Knights to an 8A state title in her sophomore season, posting a 0.62 -ERA and a 14-0 record. Davis intends to major in Biology as part of her pre-medical path with UCF.

#17 // Jada Cody // MIF
Cody will look to make an impact for the Knights in the middle infield in 2020 and beyond. As just a freshman in high school at Murietta Mesa, she hit .375 with 17 RBI and 12 stolen bases. Improving on that every year since, Cody hit .417 and added three home runs and 12 doubles in her sophomore campaign and .471 with 21 RBI and three triples her junior season. She also earned the 2018 Triple Crown Champion with the Corona Angels and was named team captain her senior year. Cody intends to major in Biology while studying at UCF.

#24 // Cassidy Cangemi // P
Cangemi will come to the Knights as redshirt freshman after not having played her first year at Boise State. Cangemi went 17-4 in her senior season with an ERA of 1.41 at Golden Valley high school. She also batted .426 with 17 RBI and seven doubles in her senior season to help lead her team to an appearance in the CIF-SS playoffs. Cangemi will be a strong addition to the Knights staff in 2020 as she struck out 509 batters over the final three years of her prep career and was also named Most Memorable Female Athlete from Los Angeles County.

#46 // Shannon Doherty // IF
The infield core receives a nice bump this year as Doherty comes to UCF as a two-time first team All-State selection as well as earning second team honors her freshman year. The infielder led her team to three state championships at Coral Springs and is a three-time All-Country honoree. Doherty hit a strong .341 with eight RBI as a freshman, .462 with 25 RBI her sophomore year and .452 with 41 RBI and eight home runs as a junior. Her strong bat and smooth fielding skills will fit in nicely in Black and Gold.
