ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – UCF Softball Head Coach Cindy Ball-Malone has announced the addition of two new faces to the Knights roster this spring. Georgia Blair and Cassidy Cangemi will be joining the team as the Knights gear up for the 2020 season beginning on February 6.
"I love how our team has invited these two young ladies into our family," said Ball. "Bringing in new players in the middle of the year isn't always the easiest. With that being said, I am proud of the vision our team has in that they see the bigger picture of making our squad better every day. They work hard every day to protect The Plex."
A transfer from San Jose State and an Australian native, Georgia Blair comes to the Knights with two years of experience at the collegiate level and a few stints on the Australian national team to boot. An infielder by trade, Blair participated in the 2015 Junior Women's Softball World Championship, 2016 Women's Softball World Championship, 2017 World Cup of Softball and the Canada Cup while with the Australian National Team.
In two full seasons with San Jose State, Blair appeared in 87 games, batting .328 with nine home runs. Blair is intending to study Integrative General Studies as a student at UCF.
"I had the privilege of being on the other side of the field as Georgia," said Ball. "She was a feared hitter in the Mountain West and played the game like an athlete far beyond her years. I'm excited to get to work with her these next two seasons. She brings knowledge and experience to our team that is welcomed and appreciated."
Coming from Boise State, Cangemi redshirted her freshman season with the Broncos. The Agua Dulce, Calif. native was a force in the circle in high school, going 17-4 her senior season with a 1.41 ERA at Golden Valley high school. Cangemi is intending to study Health Sciences before becoming a pre-med student at UCF.
"It is a blessing to have the opportunity to coach Cassidy," added Ball. "She committed to playing for me as an 8th grader prior to the rule change and moved her life to Florida to be a part of our program. It is nice to have another chance to work together as we compete for a championship."
Blair currently has two seasons remaining of athletic eligibility (2020/2021), while Cangemi still has all four years of athletic eligibility left (2020-2023).
