LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – The UCF women's tennis team concluded their time at the Dick Vitale Clay Court Classic, one of college tennis' most unique tournaments. It is the only tournament during the NCAA calendar year that is played on clay courts.
Nandini Sharma made a run in the main singles draw this weekend. She blew past Boston College's Marion Conklin by a count of 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the round of 16. Sharma would win a tight three-set match over Oklahoma's Skyler Miller 4-6, 6-1, 11-9 to advance to the quarterfinals. There, she fell to Oklahoma State's Alana Wolfberg 6-4, 7-5, ending Sharma's singles run.
Valentina Martin picked up a win in her first-round match against Boston College's Reagan Posorske. Martin won the first set 6-1 before cruising to a 6-2 second set victory. Martin was toppled by the tournament's top seeded Marcelina Podlinska of Oklahoma by a count of 6-0, 6-2.
Domenika Turkovic fell in the first round of her main draw in a neck in neck battle with Michigan's Bella Lorenzini. The match went to three sets, but Turkovic was edged 6-0, 2-6, 10-7. In her consolation match, Trukovic was narrowly defeated by USF's Amelie Boy 7-5, 6-3.
Just one doubles tandem competed in this tournament for the Knights as Sharma and Turkovic entered the bracket as the No. 2 seeded team. The UCF duo received a bye in the round of 16, sending them to the quarterfinals. In their first matchup of the tournament. They would face Oklahoma's Podlinska/Miller in the first round and top the Sooner pair in a tight 8-7(3) contest. Sharma and Turkovic would fall in the semifinals to Florida's Zein/Dimitrova in an even closer matchup that ended with a score of 8-7(9). The Florida duo would go on to win the main doubles draw.
