ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – The No. 28 men’s tennis team will face No. 9 seeded SMU in the quarterfinals tomorrow at 11 a.m. Top-seeded UCF earned a bye in the first round.
SMU topped the No. 8 seeded ECU Pirates 4-0 on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals. The two teams played a gritty doubles point, but the Mustangs would win three singles courts in straight sets.
UCF has never beat SMU in their four meetings and look to change that in their match tomorrow. The last time the two teams faced was in the first year of John Roddick’s tenure as Director of tennis. The other three meetings prior were in conference tournaments.
Something to watch for as the tournament develops is Mikhail Sokolovskiy’s season win count. He is currently tied for fourth place with 26 wins from this fall and spring. That record was set back in 1977 as Sokolovskiy looks to take sole possession of fourth place in the single season wins column in the record book.
The Knights could make it four straight shutouts if they manage to blank the Mustangs. They have shut out FAU, No. 44 USF, and Memphis consecutively.
