ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – The UCF women’s tennis team opened its fall slate at the Bedford Cup on Friday. A trio of Knights punched their tickets to the quarterfinals of the main singles draw.
No. 1 seed Rebeka Stolmar downed Laura Pellicer Perello from South Florida second round 6-7(5), 6-1, 10-7, following a bye in the opening round. She will take on the No. 7-seeded Ulyana Shirokova of Miami on Saturday.
Ksenia Kuznetsova, the No. 5 seed, breezed into the quarters with a pair of straight set victories. The Russian international bested Alexandria Mjos from South Florida 6-0, 6-0, before downing Brooke Milner from Stetson 6-2, 6-3.
Rookie Domenika Turkovic took down Mialiniaini Rakotondrazafy in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 to set up a second round contest against Natalia Boltinskaya from FAU, which the young Knight won 7-6(6), 6-3. Turkovic will meet Maryna Veksler from FIU in the quarters.
Junior Sara Culberston, No. 1 seed, will open her Saturday in the second draw semifinals against Basak Akbas, the No. 4 seed, of FIU. Culberston used a first round bye before beating Florencia Rossi from North Florida 6-4, 6-1.
The No. 1 doubles pairing of Kuznetsova and Stolmar will go up against Julia Ascua and Maja Ornberg from FGCU on Saturday morning in the quarterfinals of the main doubles draw. Culberston and Valentina Martin will go up against Jacara Gillis and Kristen Thomas in the quarters of the second doubles draw, after receiving a bye as the No. 2 seed.
