Hilderbrand Reaches US Open Second Round

FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. (UCFKnights.com) – UCF Men’s Tennis freshman Trey Hilderbrand reached the second round of the US Open Junior Boys’ Singles Division on Sunday by taking down one of the top junior tennis players in the world.

In his opening round match, the freshman knocked off ITF Junior No. 13 in the world Tao Mu from China, the 12 seed in this year’s tournament, over three sets.

"Trey competed well today," Director of Tennis John Roddick. "He was up against a very experienced player from China and played tough on the big points. Trey made the round of 16 at this tournament last year and made the quarterfinals of Wimbeldon Juniors this past summer, so he doesn't shy away from the big stage."

Hilderbrand outlasted the 2018 Wimbledon Junior Semifinalist in the opening set by winning tiebreak 7-6 (7). Mu rallied in the second set to win 6-2, before Hilderbrand closed out the contest with a 6-2 third set victory.

The San Antonio, Texas, native will square off with the winner of Swiss international Henry Von Der Schulenburg and Deney Wassermann from the Netherlands.
