ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – At the halfway point of the summer league seasons, the UCF baseball team continues to be represented well throughout the nation on various teams. Here's a look at what they've been up to over the last week.
A pair of Knights were named All-Stars in their respective leagues. Adams Torres went 2-for-4 with a double to help the West All-Stars to a 4-2 victory in the Florida League All-Star Game. The rising sophomore is hitting .254 with 11 RBI with the Winter Garden Squeeze this summer.
Dalton Wingo earned a spot on the South All-Stars in the Valley Baseball League All-Star Game. Prior to the All-Star break, Plant City, Fla., native drove in one run and recorded a pair of hits for the Waynesboro Generals last week. Wingo is a .259 hitter on the summer with seven RBI and nine walks.
Brandon Hernandez extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a base knock in all four outings last week for the Staunton Braves. The rising senior has a .371 clip at the plate with 11 RBI and three homers through 18 games this summer.
Griffin Bernardo produced a pair of multi-hit outings last week for the Cincinnati Steam. He drove in 13 runs in just six games during that stretch. Bernardo is hitting .337 with 29 RBI, which ranks third in the Great Lakes League.
Fellow Steam teammate Jaylyn Whitehead continued his solid summer with his second straight quality start last week. The lefty went six innings without allowing an earned run against the Xenia Scouts. Whitehead has a 2.21 ERA on the year with 18 punchouts over 20 1/3 innings.
Jeffrey Hakanson continued his run as one of the top pitchers in the Expedition League. The northpaw made a pair of one-inning appearances with four total strikeouts and one save for the Western Nebraska Pioneers. Hakanson has a 0.75 ERA through 12 innings with 27 strikeouts to just a trio walks and four hits. He was also named to the Expedition League All-Star Game.
Jack Sinclair improved to 3-0 with the Pioneers after his second straight win on July 7. The righty fanned four in a season-high seven innings against Hastings. Sinclair has fanned 23 in 25 2/3 innings for a 3.85 ERA.
Brody Wofford recorded six base hits over the week with a pair of RBI. The rising senior has a .333 batting average and 20 RBI in 28 games with the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters in the Northwoods League.
Luis Ferrer picked up his second win of the season last Monday for the Lakeshore Chinooks behind a 4 1/3-inning outing. The southpaw has a 1.25 ERA in 14 1/3 innings of work with 19 strikeouts and just one walk.
CAPE COD LEAGUE
• Ray Alejo (Brewster Whitecaps) – Recorded a trio of hits and scored four times over five games. Hitting .289 on the season with a trio of stolen bases.
NORTHWOODS LEAGUE
• Dallas Beaver (Lakeshore Chinooks) – Picked up a hit in four of six outings last week with a trio of RBI. Has a .269 batting average and 11 runs batted in.
FLORIDA LEAGUE
• Chandler Robertson (Winter Park Diamond Dawgs) – Played in two games over the week with two runs scored and one hit. Has a .333 clip at the dish with a trio of RBI through six games.
WEST COAST LEAGUE
• Garrett Westberg (Port Angeles Lefties) – Took his first loss of the season after going four innings against Yakima Valley on July 7. The righty is 2-1 on the summer with a 4.84 ERA and 24 strikeouts over 26 innings.
