Orlando, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – For the first time in program history, the UCF men's tennis team had players earn of All-America honors. On Wednesday afternoon, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association released its postseason honors, and the Knights' doubles pairing of Korey Lovett and Eero Vasa were among the Division I All-Americans.
"We are really proud of Korey and Eero's effort this year in doubles," Director of Tennis John Roddick said. "They had a fantastic year at No. 1 doubles and was our most consistent spot in the lineup this year. To be the first All-Americans at UCF since we went to Division I is a big deal for them and for our program. It's always cool to see a first in program history."
Lovett and Vasa had a remarkable spring campaign, even though the duo did not work together until January due to an injury to Vasa. They led they way for the Black and Gold with a 16-3 mark, starting every match this season at No. 1.
The tandem opened the year an upset win over then-No. 1 ranked and NCAA Elite Eight pairing Alfredo Perez and Johannes Ingildsen from Florida. Vasa and Lovett finished the regular season with a 6-0 mark against ranked opposition.
The pair became the first UCF doubles team to earn a spot in the NCAA Division I Doubles Championship. They reached the Round of 16 as a No. 5-8 seed after dispatching No. 27 ranked Henrik Korsgaard and Alexandre Ribeiro from Virginia Tech in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round.
Lovett and Vasa also set the program record when they were ranked as high as No. 3 in the nation in doubles by the ORACLE/ITA Ranking. They closed the year ranked No. 7 in the country.
