Black Takes Game One

John Euliano Park

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – The UCF baseball team opened its annual Black and Gold Series on Thursday. Prompted by runs in the seventh and eighth, the Black team topped the Gold team 5-4.

Gold took an early lead on a Michael Higgins RBI base hit. Matthew Mika added another run on an RBI double, as Gold extended its advantage to 3-0. Black's Brody Wofford brought his team back with a two-run shot in the fourth, before tying the game with an RBI double an inning later.

After Higgins plated Mika on a sac fly to give Gold the lead again, Black responded to even the scores with a successful double steal in the seventh. Dallas Beaver then gave Black its first and final lead of the afternoon with an RBI double to score Ray Alejo from second.

Black's Joe Sheridan went up against Gold's Jordan Spicer, and the pitching battle did not disappoint. Both arms went five innings. Sheridan fanned six, while Spicer sent seven back on strikes.

The two squads will be back at it on Friday for a 3 p.m. start. JJ Montgomery will get the ball for the Black team and Gold will send Chris Williams to the mound.
