ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – Following the most successful season by a first-year coach in program history, UCF baseball head coach Greg Lovelady announced his first recruiting class on Wednesday. The Knights welcomed 20 new players into the fold.
"It's a big class for the program," Lovelady said. "Obviously, when you lose 19 players from last year's team, you have to replace them. These guys really need to step in, take what those 19 left for them and move the program forward. I'm excited for this group. We have guys who have been drafted. We have guys that we feel are players that will come in and contribute right away."
The newest group of Knights features nine pitchers, five infielders, four outfielders and a pair of catchers. Seven will hit the field for the first time as freshmen, while 13 are transfers with previous collegiate experience, including five playing at the Division I level. Adding to numerous accolades, five players have been drafted during their careers.
The newest Knights will have the task of replacing 19 members of the 2017 squad that earned UCF its first regular-season title. Five positional starters, one weekend starter and seven arms out of the bullpen left large shoes for the younger players to fill, a challenge that Lovelady believes they can achieve.
"It's the perfect class for what we needed. We don't expect to have any fallback from last year," Lovelady continued. "We have to move the program forward. We have a lot of great returners mixed in with all these really talented players, and it's going to set us up well for the season. This class makes us more talented than we were last year. I'm jacked up for my first class to be here."
