What Happened in Vegas

Williams Interview YouTube

ORLANDO (UCFKnights.com) – Former UCF shooting guard Matt Williams had an extremely successful summer playing with the Miami Heat. The Knights all-time leader in three-pointers averaged 10.3 points per game, while shooting 45 percent from beyond the arc in six games of the Las Vegas Summer League.

"Las Vegas was a very good experience for me," Williams said after a workout at CFE Arena Thursday. "I learned a lot about the Miami Heat and the way they do things. I feel like I played very well in Vegas and it helped me a lot."

Williams made 18 three-pointers in six games, playing 21.8 minutes per contest. The Orlando native's 3.0 threes made per game tied for the fourth most in the history of the NBA Las Vegas Summer League, trailing only seven-year NBA vet Gary Neal, NBA champion Klay Thompson, and this summer's Vegas Championship MVP Kyle Kuzma.

"Coach Dawkins and his staff did a good job of preparing me, getting me ready for Summer League," Williams said. "Last year Coach put an NBA three-point line down for me in practice to get used to shooting NBA threes. The transition was smooth."

Williams didn't take a single second for granted. Every moment on the court meant something, and for it, Williams finished with the sixth highest efficiency rating in the NBA Las Vegas Summer League this year, scoring 1.22 points per possession.

"It was very competitive," Williams said of the summer league environment. "Everyone's competing for a job. Everyone is trying to feed his family. You have to do a good job taking care of your body and doing the things that will help you succeed on the court."
