ORLANDO (UCFKnights.com) – UCF men's basketball head coach Johnny Dawkins has rounded out his staff for the 2017-18 season, adding Kelvin Johnson as Director of Player Development.

"This is a great opportunity to give back to kids," Johnson said of coming on board. "I'm excited to teach many of the life lessons that I have learned over the years, and I'm excited to work with a good friend in Johnny Dawkins. We're trying to do something great here at UCF and I can't wait to get things going."

Johnson, who grew up in the Washington D.C. area, played against Dawkins in youth and high school basketball. Johnson was a standout at DeMatha High School before moving to play collegiately at Richmond.

A four-year starter and two-time captain of the Spiders, Johnson was an integral member of Richmond's first ever postseason team that appeared in the 1982 NIT, and the school's first NCAA Tournament team, defeating Auburn in the first round in 1984.

"We are thrilled to welcome Kelvin into the UCF Family as a member of our staff," Dawkins said. "With his wealth of basketball experience and knowledge, and his high level of character, I can't think of a better person to help mold our student-athletes. We are looking forward to Kelvin working as an integral member of the Knights in 2017."

Johnson, a fifth round pick of the Indiana Pacers in the 1985 NBA Draft, was inducted into the Richmond Athletics Hall of Fame in the Class of 2008-09.

Johnson joins Vince Taylor as the newest members of the UCF men's basketball staff for the 2017-18 season. Taylor was named assistant coach on May 26.
