ATHENS, Ga. (UCFKnights.com) -- The UCF women's golf team improved by five strokes in Tuesday's second round of the NCAA Athens Regional. The Knights carded a 304 Monday and came back with a 299 Tuesday. Despite that improvement, UCF is still tied for 11th with one more round to be played Wednesday.
The top six teams in each of the four regional tournaments will advance to the NCAA Championship. The Knights are 27 strokes over par through two rounds. While they trail tournament leaders Alabama by 30 strokes, they are only 15 strokes behind the two teams tied for fifth place.
Senior Ayaka Nakayama led the Knights on Tuesday. One day after posting an 8-over score of 80, she came back and fired a team-best 71 (-1) on Tuesday. Nakayama and senior Ashley Holder are both tied for 41st place at 7-over for the tournament. Holder carded a 3-over 75 Tuesday.
Junior Kaeli Jones is tied for 46th at 8-over for the tournament. Freshman Maria Balcazar is tied for 56th at +9. Senior Johanna Larsson rounds out the Knights' lineup at 11-over. She is tied for 84th.
UCF tees off 8:24 a.m. Wednesday morning for the third and final round of the NCAA Athens Regional.
