ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – After a pair of walk-off victories to start the weekend, UCF continued its resiliency by coming-from-behind in a 3-1 victory against Providence on Sunday. The Knights responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the fifth inning after Providence took a 1-0 lead to start the frame.
"We came back all weekend," head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie said. "I think that [the other team scoring] created a bit of anger inside our players. We definitely stepped up offensively. We know that we are able to come back and fight, and that is what you need at this time of year."
The Knights (10-6) won their four in a row and were paced by senior outfielder Linnea Goodman and Willow Kalinen with two hits each.
"We have been working hard this whole season and know that we are going to have to fight for every single game," Goodman added. "We are proving to ourselves that we can comeback against any team, which is providing us with more confidence."
After the Friars (3-7) pushed across an unearned run in the top of the fifth frame, UCF had an answer just like it did all weekend. Freshman designated player Tamesha Glover reached on a miscue and swiped second.
A single through the left side by Goodman and aggressive base running put two Knights in scoring position. The Knights knotted the contest, 1-1, with a base hit by junior third baseman Courtney Rotton. UCF took the lead on an RBI groundout from sophomore first baseman Cassady Brewer and tacked on an insurance run following a wild pitch, 3-1.
Alea Goes All Out
- Freshman pitcher Alea White (6-4) tallied her sixth complete game by tossing a three-hitter.
- The Land O'Lakes, Fla., native moved to 4-0 on the week and has not given up an earned run in 19 frames of work.
- White tallied five strikeouts, while lowering her ERA to 2.61 on the season.
"Alea has been on fire this whole season. She is working on her endurance. We are starting to see her get stronger as the game goes on. This game was an example of that with her sixth and seventh innings being stronger than her first and second."
-Head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie
"I have a tendency to start a little rough, but I know that I have to settle in and get comfortable. I know that I have to do my job and trust my defense, knowing that they have my back."
-Freshman P Alea White
