Top Three Tuesday

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - It was an exciting conclusion to the 2017 UCF Challenge Tuesday, as the Knights finished tied for third. The final round came down to the wire with several teams vying for the top spot.

The Knights began the day in third, eight-shots off the pace set by Mississippi State in round two. Miami was second, just one shot ahead of the Black and Gold.

The leaderboard remained the same until late in the day. Suddenly the three teams were within two shots of one another before Clemson and Texas also joined the mix.

In the end, Clemson and Miami separated from that pack to finish at -14 and tied for first. The tie was broken by counting the fifth players score from both teams and Clemson was awarded the team trophy.

Texas and Mississippi State would join UCF at -10 finishing in a three-way tie for third.

"I was proud of the team," UCF head coach Emily Marron said. "To finish third in this field is pretty good. I think they know they could have played a little bit better but that's golf. This was a good start to the spring and something we can build upon but our goal is to peak and be playing our best going into the conference championship."

Senior Ashley Holder was the Knights top performer after a final round 69 (-3) helped her secure a top ten finish. Fellow senior Ayaka Nakayama tied for 15th and freshman Maria Balcazar broke into the top-20.

Junior Kaeli Jones tied for 33rd in the 96-player field, senior Johanna Larsson tied for 50th, sophomore Nicolette Donovan tied 54th, and sophomore Anna Hack tied 62nd.

Next the Knights will head to New Orleans, La. For the All-State Sugar Bowl Classic hosted by Tulane Feb. 19-21.
