ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) – UCF rowing head coach Becky Cramer announced on Friday the addition of Kathy Les as an assistant coach. Les recently completed her fifth season as an assistant coach at Colgate.
"We are very excited about Kathy joining the UCF rowing program," Cramer said. "It was evident that her beliefs fall in line with the values that our coaching staff has for UCF Rowing. We believe that her skill set is going to allow her to hit the ground running with our novice rowers, which will allow us continue pushing forward in winning championships and improving our finish at NCAAs."
The primary responsibilities for Les are working with the novice rowers and assisting with recruiting, while handling assigned administrative duties.
"I am absolutely thrilled to come to UCF and become a part of this staff that has built a championship culture," Les said. "This program with its facilities and support from the school has tons of potential. I am excited to help build the Knights into a nationally prominent program."
In addition to her assistant coach position at Colgate, she also worked on the event management and facilities staff. She managed a number of day-to-day operations for the Raiders' rowing team, including compliance, equipment and practice planning.
While with the Raiders, she was responsible for the novice and junior varsity rowers, including the Varsity 4 and Second Varsity 8.
Les began her coaching career at UConn where she was the volunteer assistant coach from 2009-11. Prior to coaching, Les was a four-year member of the Huskies rowing team and a team captain her senior season. She earned the Drive Award three years in a row from 2007-09.
A native of South Windsor, Conn., Les earned her bachelor's degree in ecology and evolutionary biology and her master's degree in exercise science from Connecticut in 2009 and 2011, respectively. She also competes as an amateur powerlifter and already owns four first-place finishes.
Two information meetings about becoming a member of the UCF rowing program are set for Aug. 24 and Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. inside the Wayne Densh Center for Student-Athlete Leadership.
