ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - The UCF softball team will face some familiar opponents at the NCAA Gainesville Regional this weekend. The Knights played two of the three teams during the regular season.
The Knights (36-20) make the third straight NCAA Regional appearance for the first time in school history. UCF earned its fourth at-large bid and will play in the NCAA Tournament for the seventh time in school history.
Seniors Samantha McCloskey and Shelby Turnier, both American Athletic Conference First Team selections, were named to The American All-Tournament Team in Tulsa last weekend. Turnier set the UCF Softball career victories record (79) while striking out 13 in the Knights' 3-2 opening-round win over UConn. McCloskey accounted for two of UCF's three hits in a 4-0 loss to the eventual champion Tulsa in the semifinals.
UCF will open against the No. 2 seed Florida Atlantic (50-7) at noon on Friday on ESPNU. The teams faced off once in the regular season, with the Owls claiming a 2-0 win in an international tiebreaker eight innings at the UCF Softball Complex.
The Knights and the Owls meet for the 23rd time on Friday. FAU holds a 13-8 advantage in the all-time series, but the Knights have won the three of the last four meetings, including a 2-0 victory in Boca Raton last season.
The Black and Gold also faced host Florida (53-5), who slotted with the No. 1-overall seed. The Knights hosted the Gators in Orlando on April 6, dropping a close 3-1 decision. Florida leads the all-time series 17-3, with UCF's last victory coming in April 2012.
Florida takes on Alabama State (27-24) in its first-round game. The Knights and Lady Hornets have met one time previously, on Feb. 24, 2007, where UCF claimed a 9-0 home victory.
