ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - Senior Shelby Turnier collected the 10th conference weekly award of her career on Monday as she was named the American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week.
The Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., native posted the 21st shutout of her UCF career with a 1-0 win over UConn on April 1. Turnier claimed sole possession of third place on UCF's all-time shutout leaderboard (UCF record is 34).
The win also marked her 70th as a Knight, making her one of three to reach 70 career wins. She is now eight victories away from tying the program record of 78, which was set by Mackenzie Audas in 2015.
With 10 strikeouts against UConn, she now has four double-digit strikeout games on the season and pushed her career total to 744 strikeouts, which ranks third all-time at UCF.
Turnier helped UCF win its league opener for the third straight season, shutting out UConn in a 1-0 game on Friday. Inclement weather in Storrs cancelled the final two games of the series. Head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie registered her 800th career victory in Storrs.
The right-handed hurler picked up her third weekly award of the season, earning the honor on Feb. 15 and March 7. She garnered The American Pitcher of the Week accolade five times in 2015, and earned the distinction twice in 2014.
Turnier and the Knights return to action on Wednesday, hosting No. 1 Florida at the UCF Softball Complex. Due to high pre-sales demand, ticket sales for the game have been suspended. It is possible that additional tickets may be available at the gate once the game is underway. Please call 407-UCF-1000 with questions.
The Knights and Gators are set for a 6 p.m. start, and UCF State of Florida t-shirts will be given to the first 150 fans. UCF football head coach Scott Frost will throw out the first pitch.
