CHARLOTTE, N.C. (UCFKnights.com) - The UCF men's tennis team started fast and kept its momentum against Charlotte on Friday afternoon. The Knights topped Charlotte, 4-0, at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex.

"After losing the last two doubles matches at home, it felt awesome to come out on fire today and play great doubles," sophomore Tyler Pate said. "From the first point, we had great energy and played solid the entire time."

Pate and partner Reece Acree opened the day with a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles. UCF (8-9) clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win on court one from juniors Chris Barrus and Inaki Espindola.

"I'm glad we clinched in doubles, and especially since it came against a team that we had lost to before in the All-American tournament," Espindola said. "The three teams played really solid tennis, and this carried the momentum into singles. Hopefully we can keep it going for another win tomorrow against Furman."

Leading 1-0 in the match, the Black and Gold won their opening sets on five of the six singles courts. Acree added to the lead with a straight-set win at No. 6 singles. He topped Jensen Martin, 6-0, 6-2, to push the UCF advantage to 2-0.

Junior Mariano Porter's 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles gave the Knights a 3-0 edge, and senior Jose Sangroniz clinched the UCF victory with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles.

"We won the doubles point, showing a lot of energy," Sangroniz said. "We kept it going in singles, playing our style and dictating the matches."

The Knights close out the road trip tomorrow with a 1 p.m. match at Furman.

Coaches Corner
"We started fast in doubles. We executed well and had good energy, and we're happy for the team.

"We won the first set in five singles matches. This is critical on the road against a good team. We sustained our levels and closed them out.

"It was a complete team effort again. We're proud of the guys and their growth this season. We have more ways to improve, and are eager to do it. We are ready for another tough road test tomorrow at Furman."
