ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - Junior Inaki Espindola provided a spark to open singles play, but the UCF men's tennis team fell short against St. John's. The Red Storm earned a 4-1 victory over the Knights at the UCF Tennis Complex on Tuesday afternoon.
St. John's (3-1) gained momentum with a 6-0 victory at No. 2 doubles. UCF (0-1) looked to pull even as senior Jose Sangroniz and junior Reece Acree held a 5-2 lead at No. 3 doubles, but the Red Storm captured the doubles point with a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles.
Junior Inaki Espindola put a halt to the St. John's drive with a straight set win at No. 3 singles. His 6-2, 6-2 victory pulled the Knights even at 1-1.
Sangroniz won his opening set at No. 1 singles, 6-1, and was headed to a third set before three straight St. John's wins clinched the match victory for the Red Storm.
UCF is back in action on Sunday, hosting back-to-back NJCAA Division I national champion ASA Junior College. The exhibition match is slated for a noon start at the UCF Tennis Complex.
