DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - Two Knights were crowned singles champions at the three-day Juan Varon Wildcat Invitational hosted by Bethune-Cookman on Sunday. Sophomore Monica Matias and freshman Diana Dehterevich were each crowned champions in their respective flights.
Matias, who lost in the championships last year, claimed the singles Wildcat flight title after beating opponent Anna Bonadonna of Iowa State, 6-2, 6-2. In the Cookman flight, Dehterevich took the title with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Flager's Felicia Runkel.
The Black and Gold also took two consolation singles titles. Junior Cortney Cesarini won the Maroon consolation flight after a win over Embry Riddle's Anna Gotz 8-3. Another 8-3 victory by sophomore Emilia Granstrom over Florida Tech's Natasha Vukovic secured the gold flight consolation title.
Senior Clare Mendell won three singles matches this weekend before falling in the White flight final to Iowa State's Regina Espindola 7-5, 6-3.
The Knights will be back in action at the Collegiate Clay Court Invitational at ESPN Wide World of Sports on Nov. 5.
