DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - Three Knights will be playing for a singles title on Sunday at the Juan Varon Wildcat Invitational Tournament played on the clay courts at the Florida Tennis Center.
Freshman Diana Dehterevich posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Rollins' Hayley Macperson in the quarterfinals before cruising to 6-0,6-0 victory over Bethune Cookman's Ancia Ifill.
The second victory of the day was served up by senior Clare Mendell over Mary Ann Aaron of Eckerd 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. Mendell followed up with a 6-0, 7-5 semifinal win over Rollins' Johanna Olsson.
Getting to the finals was not easy for sophomore Monica Matias who posted two three-set wins. The first was a 5-7, 6-0, 10-3 quarterfinal defeat over Florida Tech's Erin Egoroff. Matias followed with a tough 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 semifinal victory over Iowa State's Anna Kuuttila.
In the consolation singles brackets, junior Cortney Cesarini and sophomore Emilia Granstrom each knocked off their opponents 8-2.
The final day begins on Sunday on the clay courts of the Florida Tennis Center.
