FORT MYERS, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - The UCF men's tennis team wrapped up the final day of the Bedford Cup on Sunday. Junior Chris Barrus finished the day with a victory in singles and doubles play.
Barrus defeated Florida State's Jake Albo in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, to claim a share of the Flight 1 consolation title. Junior Arjun Watane won after Bethune-Cookman's Pablo Lopez retired.
Junior Reece Acree came back to defeat Miami's Nile Clark. Acree won 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 in the North quarterfinals.
Sophomore Nico De Fraia saw his winning streak come to a close after dropping an exciting semifinal match, 7-5, 6-4, to North Florida's Jonathan Deautriell.
The doubles tandem of Barrus and junior Inaki Espindola earned a victory over Florida Gulf Coast's Andres Alfonzo and Lucas Vaz, 8-6. It was the duo's second win of the weekend.
The Knights tallied 14 singles victories and seven doubles wins at the Bedford Cup.
"The first road trip of the season is always fun and productive," head coach Bobby Cashman said. "We grow our bond as a family by spending four straight days with each other. We have many areas to improve, but that is the cornerstone to our program's culture. We are eager to get back in the weight room, sand pit, on the track and obviously on the tennis court to improve this week."
UCF returns to action Oct. 3 at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa.
