BROKEN ARROW, Okla. (UCFKnights.com) - The UCF cross country took on unfamiliar temperatures in the 40s in Oklahoma to place fourth for the second straight year at the American Athletic Conference Championship Friday.
The Knights put five runners in the top 40 overall, but it was not enough to come out on top. Tulsa won in the Hurricane's first American season, placing five in the top 11 overall. Tulsa's 40 points topped runner-up UConn (67), SMU (81), UCF (124) and the seven other teams in competition.
Junior Anne-Marie Blaney led the Knights, but was unable to win back-to-back individual championships. She placed third in a time of 20:45 on the six kilometer course, trailing only two harriers from UConn. Emily Durgin took home the title in 10:29, just 16 seconds ahead of Blaney, while Lauren Sara placed second in 20:32.
Freshman Holly Wooley was the second Knight to cross the line, placing 20th in a time of 21:55. Classmates Laura Korsmit and Kalleigh Forrester weren't far behind, taking 28th (22:28) and 33rd (22:49), respectively.
Senior Amelia Williams rounded out the scoring for UCF with a 40th place finish. She recorded a personal best 6K time of 23:11 to top her previous best of 23:27. Amy Ankli and Claire Castillo were sixth and seventh for the Knights, finishing 52nd (23:42) and 55th (23:46) overall.
The Knights will continue the season at the NCAA South Region Championships in Tallahassee on Nov. 14.
