ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - Two penalty kicks within a four-minute span helped lift the UCF women's soccer team a 2-0 victory over Brown on Sunday afternoon. The Knights (6-2-0) picked up their fourth-straight win and maintained their perfect record against Ivy League programs, improving to 6-0 all-time.
Junior midfielder Jennifer Martin put UCF on the board just before the 14th minute off a penalty shot after freshman Lena Petermann was taken down in the box. In effect, Martin became the fourth Knight to net a game-winner this year.
Nearly four minutes later, Petermann received freshman Kayla Adamek's cross in the box, and her shot was deflected by Brown keeper Amber Bledsoe. There was a flurry in front of the net, and again a foul was committed in the box to bring up a penalty shot for the Knights.
Junior Tatiana Coleman took the PK this time, scoring her sixth goal of the season to put UCF ahead 2-0.
The two goals proved to be all the Knights needed to secure their shutout over the Bears (2-2-0), although they did come up with some near goals in the second half.
Senior Ashley Nicol sent a beautiful ball in the 79th minute to freshman Caroline Bado, who beat the keeper on a breakaway but her momentum carried her too deep to allow her to get a shot off in time.
Late in the game, Alex Major delivered a cross into the box that was batted out by Brown's keeper to Alex Piercy. Piercy's shot was saved by a Bears defender as UCF held on for its 2-0 win.
The Knights head to No. 12 Georgetown on Thursday at 3 p.m.
