MIAMI, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Freshman Kalyn Cenal came up big with a late RBI single that pushed the UCF softball team past FIU, 2-0, on Wednesday night at the FIU Softball Complex. Pitching dominated throughout as neither team was able to score until the Knights (22-21) put a pair on the board in the top of the sixth inning. The Panthers (24-20) only managed two hits and did not advance a runner past second base.
With the score deadlocked at zero, freshman Kirsten Foster led off the sixth with a single. Sophomore Maddy Schroeder attempted a sacrifice to move the runner, but the Panthers' throw sailed into centerfield on the force attempt on the lead runner. With runners now on first and third and two outs, Cenal came up with her clutch hit to center that scored Schroeder and put the Knights up 1-0.
Sophomore Hayley Barrow was tabbed to pinch run for Cenal and the young catcher showed off impressive awareness as she intentionally got herself into a rundown situation between first and second on a stolen base attempt. Barrow kept herself alive long enough to Schroeder to scamper home from third and put the Knights up 2-0.
Sophomore Mackenzie Audas continued her impressive run as she allowed just one hit over five innings of work as she won her fourth-consecutive start. The Plant City native struck out six and now has 44 strikeouts in her last 29 innings. Freshman Shelby Turnier came in and tossed two scoreless innings of relief as she earned her first-career save.
The Black and Gold have three home games remaining at the UCF Softball Complex, with single game tickets available for purchase online at UCFAthletics.com and Ticketmaster.com, or by calling the UCF Athletics Ticket Office at (407) UCF-1000.
