ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - There was plenty of late-inning drama in Game 1 of the Black & Gold World Series Wednesday afternoon at the UCF baseball complex as Black put up four runs in the top of the fifth and held off Gold in the bottom of the sixth for the 4-3 win.
The trio of Ryan Breen, Parker Webster and Chris Taladay all notched two-out RBI hits, including Breen and Parker sending shots to the left-center gap to drive in the first two runs of the frame. Taladay dropped a single into shallow center to tie the game at 3-all and would later come around to score on a fielding error to give Black the lead for good.
The Gold squad would not go away quietly as it had runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Shawn McDorman buckled down and was able to get JoMarcos Woods swinging to notch the two-inning save and preserve the win for fellow senior Gregg Cooke.
With each of the three contests lasting six innings, starters Daniel Davis for Black and Spencer Davis of Gold went the maximum three innings allowed. Daniel would settle for the no decision after allowing three hits and a run with one strikeout.
Spencer Davis' debut wowed the crowd in attendance after he used just 10 pitches to strikeout the side in the top of the first. He finished the afternoon by scattering a pair of hits while registering five punch outs.
It was also a big day for potential walk-ons Lorenzo Butler and Bret Gordon. The duo combined for four hits for the Black while Butler went 3-for-3, including a double down the right-field line.
Gold will look to even the series Thursday at 3 p.m. when sophomore Harrison Hukari faces off against rookie Tyler Martin.
Also, make sure to head out to the baseball complex on Friday for the series finale at 6:30 p.m. There will be plenty of prizes, giveaways, music and the unveiling of the 2012-13 Diamond Girls. Admission is free for all.
