STANFORD, Calif. (UCFAthletics.com) - Needing to finish in the top five to advance to the NCAA Championship, the No. 22 UCF men's golf team is currently sitting in a tie for fourth, after posting a 278 (-2) in the opening round of the NCAA Regional Thursday at the Stanford Golf Course.
The squad was led by sophomore Ricardo Gouveia's 68 (-2), which landed him in a tie for seventh at the end of the day. Gouveia led the Knights with five birdies. His consistent play led to his 34 (-1) on both the front and back nine.
UCF is making its sixth-consecutive regional appearance. The Knights are tied with UAB and Wichita State after 18 holes. Thirteen teams are competing at Stanford. Sophomore Jose Joia is one shot behind Gouveia and sits in a tie for 17th. Like Gouveia, he posted a 34 (-1) on the front nine. Joia finished the first round at 69 (-1).
One shot in back of Joia is sophomore Greg Eason. Three birdies led to a 32 (-3) on the back nine. Eason tallied a 70 (E) on the day.
Also succeeding on the back nine was senior Brad Schneider. His eagle on hole one was key to a 34 (-1) on those holes. Schneider posted a 71 (+1).
Sophomore Kyle Wilshire fired four birdies and ended the round at 74 (+4). With a strong opening round, San Francisco's 273 (-7) is good enough for a three-stroke lead over second-place No. 2 Cal.
BYU's Zachary Blair and LSU's Sang Yi each posted a 66 (-4) to finish the day in first. The duo is one stroke above a quartet tied for second.
The second round starts tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. eastern time. Fans can follow the action live on golfstat.com. The event will conclude Saturday with 18 holes.
