ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - As the final days of 2011 fade away and 2012 approaches, we here at UCFAthletics.com want to look back at the best moments of the past year and honor arguably the most significant 12 months in school history.
Here is a breakdown of the No. 8 moment of 2011 for UCF Athletics:
MOMENT: Men's golf wins its third-straight C-USA title
DATE: April 26
SITE: C-USA Championship, Texarkana, Arkanas
SIGNIFICANCE: UCF entered the final round in third place, but recorded an 8-under 280 to rally to win the third straight league title. Battling inclement weather the first two days of the tournament, the Knights fell as far back at eighth place, but put on a furious rally to continue its dominance over Conference USA. UCF became the first C-USA school to win at least three titles in a row since TCU captured four straight from 2002-05.
WHAT HAPPENED: C-USA Freshman of the Year Greg Eason shot a 6-under, 210 to finish second overall in the individual competition and lead the Knights to the victory. He had two birdies and an eagle in his final-round 69 to pace the Knights. Junior Brad Schneider also recorded a Top 10 finish at 1-under. Connor Arendell, Nuno Henriques and Kyle Wilshire also shot even par or better in the final win to secure the victory. UCF's depth was also a big factor in the overall success of the team during the season. The Knights had 50 rounds of par-or-better during the season, five golfers had low rounds in the 60s and there were 16 top-10 finishes.
THEY SAID IT: ``Our guys had on their minds that winning away from home was really important to them,'' UCF coach Bryce Wallor said. ``We had won in Orlando and we heard some comments like, `Well, they're playing at home' and `Well, they are playing on their own grass,' and `They don't even have to travel.' A lot of people made a lot of excuses for why we won in the past and it kind of made the hairs on the back of the necks of our guys stand up. We were determined to go off to another site and be successful.''
