LA QUINTA, Calif. (UCFAthletics.com) - Competing against some of the nation's premier squads, the UCF men's golf team opened play at The Prestige at PGA WEST Sunday at the Greg Norman Course. The Knights, who are ranked sixth in the country, are 15th following one round at 297 (+9).

The tournament includes five of the top-30 squads in the country. No. 2 Oregon leads the field at 9-under 279. Top-ranked Stanford and Washington are tied for second at 280 (-8).

The event is the third of the fall for the Knights, who have claimed titles at their two previous tournaments. Most recently, UCF finished first at the Adams Cup of Newport in Rhode Island on Sept. 20.

The three-day event will continue Monday.

UCF sophomore Kyle Wilshire (Georgetown, Ky.) is tied for 28th after posting a 72 (E) Sunday. Sophomore Ricardo Gouveia (Almancil, Portugal) is tied for 49th at 2-over 74. Fellow sophomore Jose Joia (Lagoa, Portugal) is tied for 59th at 75 (+3).

Senior Brad Schneider (Valrico, Fla.) carded a 4-over 76 and is tied for 59th, and sophomore Hojin Kang (Lake Mary, Fla.) is tied for 72nd (78, +6). Kang is making his season debut.

UCF and Duke are the only teams from the east coast competing at the event in California.

Spencer Fletcher of Arizona State and Andrew Yun of Stanford are tied for first individually at 6-under 66.
