ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF men's golf team will open its 2011-12 campaign Saturday at the Northern Intercollegiate in Illinois. Earlier this week, the Knights concluded qualifying for the event.
After four rounds of qualifying, UCF's lineup is set with senior Brad Schneider (Valrico, Fla.), sophomores Greg Eason (Leicester City, England), Ricardo Gouveia (Almancil, Portugal) and Jose Joia (Lagoa, Portugal) and freshman McCabe Buege (Rogers, Minn.). Gouveia, Joia and Buege will all be making their UCF debuts at the season-opening tournament. A year ago, Gouveia and Joia competed for Lynn.
One round of qualifying was held at Northshore, and the other 54 holes were played at Rio Pinar.
Schneider posted a 277 (-11) to finish first during qualifying. He was followed by Eason at 9-under 279. Gouveia (281, -7), Joia (289, +1) and Buege rounded out the top five. Buege suffered an injury and was not able to compete during the final round of qualifying, but was included in the traveling group as a result of being two shots ahead of the fifth and five shots ahead of sixth after three rounds.
The Northern Intercollegiate is the first of four events this fall for the Knights. UCF is coming off of its third-consecutive Conference USA Championship, including its second-straight title under head coach Bryce Wallor.
