SUGAR GROVE, Ill. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF men's golf team started its season in strong fashion Saturday, as the Knights led after the opening round of the Northern Intercollegiate at Rich Harvest Farms. The Knights, who are ranked 25th nationally in Golfweek's preseason poll, recorded a 6-under 282 in the first round.
Because play was delayed Saturday morning due to fog, the 16 teams in the tournament were unable to finish the second round. On Sunday, the second round will resume, followed by the final 18 holes.
UCF sophomore Jose Joia (Lagoa, Portugal) carded a 6-under 66 in the first round and led after 18 holes. Joia is competing in his first event as a Knight after transferring from Lynn. Senior Brad Schneider (Valrico, Fla.) is fourth after posting a 69 (-2) to start the tournament.
The Knights are four strokes ahead of Ball State. The Cardinals registered a 2-under 286.
UCF sophomore Greg Eason (Leicester City, England) is tied for 16th at 72 (E). Fellow sophomore Ricardo Gouveia (Almancil, Portugal) is tied for 39th after posting a 3-over 75. Freshman McCabe Buege (Rogers, Minn.) is also in action for the Knights.
The event is the first of four this fall for the Knights.
UCF was competing for the first time since participating in the NCAA Regionals last May.
