ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF novice rowing team is set to open its 2011 season Saturday when it takes part in the annual Metro Cup hosted by Rollins College in Winter Park. The event, which will be the novice squad's first-career sprint race, is scheduled to get underway at 8:40 a.m.

"I know the entire novice squad is excited for race day and its first opportunity to represent UCF on the 2000-meter sprint course," novice coach Joel Furtek said. "We've had a great preseason and the lineups have started to come together. The team has great leadership from a few experienced rowers and there are a number of very talented true novices who will definitely have an impact on our program. We all look forward to spring training next week and months of racing, but for now we are focused on that first 2k tomorrow."

Besides the Knights and the Tars, Villanova, Duquesne and the UCF club team will also compete in the regatta.

Parking for the event will be located at Lakemont Elementary School. A shuttle bus will be available to take fans to the finish-line viewing area and will run continuously from 6:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

UCF's second novice four boat, made up of Meghan Martin, Dayna Bentel, Blaine Lewis, Nancy Nasser and Liz Anderson, will start the action for the Black and Gold at 8:40 a.m., before the first varsity four takes to the water at 9:20 a.m.

At 9:40 a.m., the third novice four race will get underway, while the second novice eight event is scheduled to begin at 10:20 a.m.

In the event finale, the first varsity eight boat, manned by Martin, Bentel, Karly Brown, Kaitlin Meadows, Liz McKinney, Liz Janiak, Aubrey Kuperman, Meredyth Ring and Jessie Seay, will race for the Metro Cup Championship at 10:40 a.m., with the awards ceremony to follow shortly after at 11:20 a.m.

In 13 years of competing at the Metro Cup, the Knights have totaled 37 victories at the regatta, including 12-straight in the varsity 8+ event, which included a first-place showing in the event last season.
