ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Another large media contingent arrived for UCF baseball's annual media day Tuesday as the Knights are preparing for Opening Weekend Friday-Sunday against Siena. Over 20 media members came out to the field to talk to the Knights, as well as take a few swings during batting practice.
Third-year head coach Terry Rooney announced that UCF's Opening Day starter Friday will be junior Danny Winkler out of Parkland College in Illinois. He also mentioned sophomore outfielder Ronnie Richardson could see time on the mound this season. Richardson finished his prep career at Lake Region High School with an ERA of 2.00 or better all four years.
"Last year we were a young team but this year we are older and more mature," said Richardson. "Coach Rooney has high expectations for us every year. He's always going to be fired up, so we are always trying to match his energy."
Along with doing a couple 1-on-1 spots with local television stations, Rooney spent a lot of time breaking down his pitching staff as well as the progress of several of his players including Chris Taladay, Beau Taylor and Darnell Sweeney. But overall, he emphasized that his team is anxious to get to Friday night.
"We are obviously very excited about the season ahead," said Rooney. "No matter what sport you are in, you just can't wait to get to your first game. Our opening game of the season is Friday night, and we have high expectations for the season ahead."
Opening Day's first pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. against the Saints. Former Knights Chris Duffy and Shane Brown will be honored prior to the contest.
Tickets for this weekend's games, as well as several different season ticket packages, are on sale now and can be purchased by calling (407) 823-1000 or by visiting UCFAthletics.com.
