ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF rowing team commences the 2010 fall season when four novice eight boats compete at the Hatter Classic Saturday on the St. John's River in nearby DeLand. The event, hosted by Stetson, is scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m. as the Knights will be led by second-year head coach Joel Furtek.
The Black and Gold squad will be taking on the Hatters and USF in the Women's Varsity Eight event.
"We're excited for the opportunity to represent UCF for the first time and to pack all that we've learned in these last five weeks into a single three-mile race," said Furtek. "Of the 36 women racing, only five have limited high school experience and 31 began their rowing careers only five weeks ago."
UCF will race four novice boats this Saturday and looks to continue their central Florida dominance.
In 2009, the UCF novice A boat and the UCF novice B boat finished one-two in the varsity eight event with times of 18:02 and 18:44 respectively. Embry-Riddle finished eight seconds later for third-place and the UCF novice C boat finished in fourth at 20:25 on the 2.5 mile course.
The Black and Gold also competed against host Stetson and the UCF club rowing team during the event, with the two squads finishing with times of 21:21 and 21:28, respectively, to close out the field.
Collegiate novice events are limited to college scullers, rowers, and coxswains in NCAA programs who have been competing for one year or less as of the Regatta Day. Experience in sculling events does not count as experience in sweep events and vice versa. Previous junior/high school rowing experience is allowed in this category.
